Your exploration of Connemara begins today. Initially
heading in a Northerly direction you will ride in the shadow of
the Twelve Pins. A famous landmark in Connemara. Total distance
for today is up to you.
You
will pass through many little costal fishing villages on today’s
route. With their multi-color fishing boats and the Twelve pins
in the background you will find yourself cycling through picture
postcard countryside. Many opportunities for lunch today. The route
you choose combined with your pace will dictate the best lunch stop
for each individual. You stop at Kylemore Abbey and Tully Cross
along today's route.
Your destination for today is the town of Clifden
which is situated right on the Atlantic coast. This is a relatively
new town built under grant by its founder John Darcy. The great
famine of 1847 had a devastating effect on many of the small fledgling
towns in the West of Ireland. Darcy wen t
to great lengths to sustain his new town and spent most of his personal
fortune purchasing food stocks for his tenants. Finally when he
had little more than enough for his own family he returned to relatives
in England leaving his Gothic mansion to the people of Clifden.
Today a monument overlooking the town of Clifden bears testimony
to the benevolence of John Darcy. Our support bus will take you
up to view the peninsula and Darcy's Monument from the aptly named
Sky Road.
Our 18 meter pool is heated to 29 degrees for your
enjoyment with a separate paddling pool for kiddies attached. Our
pool deck area also features a Swedish 10 seater steam room, purpose
built sauna and a jacuzzi to melt away any stiffness after today's
ride.
After diner you should take
advantage of the many music pubs in Clifden.
